Jesse Rose Biography:
‘Your average club-goer may not know what to call the hybrid house being made by Jesse Rose, but there’s no mistaking its potent mix of mind-numbingly crisp techno/house beats, gritty sample riddled melodies and bassbin-blowing subsonics or its effectiveness on a dancefloor’ – xlr8r Magazine.
Regarded as house music’s most forward thinking producer of the last years alongside the likes of Switch & Clause Vonstroke, Jesse is responsible for twisting up the template of house music as we know it today.
Learning his trade as a dj with regular slots at the legendary London club Fabric and visits over the pond in Europe, Jesse now holds residency at his monthly Made to Play night at the Panorambar in Berlin and tours the world for fifty-two weeks of the year. To date Jesse has recorded for the likes of Classic, Get Physical, JBO, Simple, his own Made to Play and Front Room imprints and is currently signed to Dave Taylor’s Dubsided label. If you need a dance-floor remix Jesse is the guy you turn to, lending his skills to artists such as Hotchip, Armand Van Helden, Underworld, Simian Mobile Disco, Layo & Bushwacka!, Claude VonStroke and literally tons more. While all of this has been going on Jesse still managed to put away a collaborations album ‘More Than One’ and the highly respected ‘Body Language 3’ compilation on Get Physical.
Two thousand & seven seemed without doubt to be Jesse’s year of recognition, featured in every international dance music publication, nominated alongside four others for ‘Best British DJ’ at the DJ Mag best of British Awards, number four in IDJ players of the year & fourteen in Mixmag’s best DJ’s in the world 2007. Jesse finished a triumphant year playing in Sydney to 15,000 people on the main stage at Field Day.
Jesse has been playing records since the tender age of fourteen, raised on an upbringing of Motown Soul, Jazz and Eighties Funk in London’s Ladbroke Grove area. At the beginning of the nineties Jesse moved to Bristol and started hanging out with old friend Jamie Anderson. A few years on and the duo soon started djing and began throwing club nights, homing in on their particular sound of Chicago house mixed with early Detroit techno. By the mid nineties Jesse had already earned a reputation for solid sets across the four/four spectrum. It was around this time that those influences and ideas were finally cemented and Jesse began producing.
By ninety-seven Jesse was ready to make the move back to his hometown, recording his first mix compilation for the Subversive label and releasing his first single on Artform. The mix compilation received critical acclaim from all sides of the dance music community, who picked up on the unique way Jesse presented his sound.
In two thousand Jesse started working on his biggest project to date, alongside Chris Belsey the Front Room Recordings label was born. The label received loyal support from the off with an artist roster that boasts the likes of Solid Groove, Henrik Schwarz, Chris Duckenfield, Trevor Loveys, Jamie Anderson, Rob Mello, John Tejada and Stefan Goldmann. Jesse also worked on ‘loungin’ recordings’ from the same year until two thousand & six. Jesse now owns Made to Play & Front Room as his outlet for everything he loves in house & techno.
It was at the same time that Jesse started the labels that he met the man that would change him from DJ to producer: Dave Taylor (AKA Switch / Solid Groove). The first project they worked on together as ‘Induceve’ was ‘Jazz Chops’, which automatically became a house anthem. With a string of releases on Derrick Carter’s Classic label and more recently on Dave’s Dubsided imprint, ‘Induceve’ have become renowned for their way of twisting the house template. Dave has co-produced some of Jesse’s biggest productions including the massive ‘A-sided’ & ‘You’re All Over My Head’ on Dubsided. Jesse also records as ‘Content’ and regularly produces alongside Trevor Loveys as izit? and Oliver $ for the Made To Play imprint.
If it looks like things couldn’t get any better for Jesse, 2008 sees him release his first solo album, a remix album, an album tour for the first made to play compilation and more releases as ‘Content’, will he ever take a break?
Upcoming Jesse Rose Projects:
‘Playing Around Tour’ Jesse will be touring from March through to May to promote his first label showcase compilation of made to play tracks, taking in over 26 dates across North America and Europe. ‘Playing Around’ is released at the end of April on Made to Play.
Jesse Rose ‘What Do You Do If You Don’t?’ Album on Dubsided Jesse’s first solo album is due to finally hit the streets in Early Summer 2008 on Dubsided and includes appearances from Joe Hotchip, David E Sugar, Roxy Cottontail and collaborations with Switch and Afra & The Incredible Beatbox Band.
Afra & IBB in Tokyo Jesse has been in Tokyo in January to produce a track for Afra & The Incredible Beatbox Band. This track will be forthcoming on the group’s album due out in Spring 2008. They also took time out of the studio to perform together at womb in Tokyo & Osaka.
The Labels Both Front Room & Made to Play step up this year with a huge output of releases. Front Room will release tracks from Style of Eye, Deadset & Harry Axt over the coming months and Made to Play has new releases from idiotproof (aka Jamie Anderson & Deepgroove), Lil’ Bo Tweek (Trevor Loveys & Chris Belsey) and Two Much Fun (The new project from Jesse Rose & Samim).
