Since 2007, Joel Boychuk has released music on some of dance music’s most esteemed labels, all the while retaining very much has his own identity. Over the years the Canadian has explored his own raw form of techno expressionism: sometimes dark and abstract, other times more melodic and emotional. Music for both the mind, and the dancefloor.
After gravitating to electronic music in the mid 90s, Joel devoured as much as possible, though the helping hand of his mother in crafting a fake ID was what really set him off. With his fake ID in hand, he went on to spend every weekend exploring parties in and around Detroit, where he’d solidify his tastes and meet life long friends and colleagues who have all made their way into this worldwide scene. All of us carrying that torch onwards in different ways. People like Matthew Dear, Seth Troxler, Mike Servito, were just a few who came out of that scene.” Joel too has carried the torch to all of his tour stops over the years, with dates at influential clubs like Watergate in Berlin (his first overseas performance, no less) Womb in Tokyo, Fabric in London, Rex in Parisand Crobar in Buenos Aires as well as festivals like Sonar, Love Parade and Timewarp, constantly channelling those early 90s Detroit influences from the city’s radio stations to its DJs to the famed Untitled parties at The Shelter. His seamless DJ sets, where he mixes a range of techno and house over three or four decks continue to impress on the dance floor and as he ramps up his production output in 2017, there’s no end in sight for the producer and DJ.
